The
Copenhagen Aikido Club
was founded in the spring of 1975 in Idrætshuset in
Østerbro. In cooperation with Takeji Tomita Sensei (8th dan)
in Stockholm, Ulf Evenås (7th dan) in Gothenburg, Lars-Göran
Andersson (5th dan) in Torsby as well as a number of Swedish
clubs, the foundation of the club was laid.
From the beginning of the 1980s, contact with Tomita
Sensei’s teacher, Morihiro Saito sensei (9th dan) in Iwama,
Japan, was intensified. When Tomita Sensei in 1992 chose to
found a school of Aikido independent of Saito Sensei, the
Copenhagen Aikido Club chose to become affiliated directly
with Saito Sensei and thus became an establishing part of
that which until Saito Sensei’s death in 2002 was known as
Iwama Ryu Scandinavia.
The Copenhagen Aikido Club is part of an ever increasing
number of Aikido clubs in Scandinavia which have all been
directly affiliated with Saito Sensei. This group now goes
by the name of Takemusu Aikido Scandinavia which at present
consists of approximately 30 clubs counting more than 1.000
practitioners in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Ulf
Evenås is the Shihan (top representative) of this group and
is responsible for all kyu and dan tests, which are most
often conducted by the highest ranking instructors in
Scandinavia.
Takemusu
Aikido Scandinavia
is characterized by the traditional tai-jutsu techniques and
their relation to the weapons techniques that the founder of
Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, developed in Iwama and passed on to
Saito Sensei. Apart from the cooperation with the
Scandinavian clubs, we also have a close relationship and
exchange with a number of clubs worldwide, who are also
affiliated with Morihiro Saito Sensei.
It has been possible for our club to hold some of the
largest seminars in Europe such as our nine International
Summer Camps in the period from 1986 to 2004 with up to 300
participants from all over the world.
The Copenhagen Aikido Club is the largest and oldest club
within Takemusu Aikido Scandinavia in Denmark. We are proud
to enjoy a central position in Danish, Scandinavian and
international Aikido, and we strive to be able to pass on
Aikido in the same spirit as that in which we received it
from Morihiro Saito Sensei.
